The Issues

What Parksville Citizens Care About

Building community is really important to me. It is at the heart of how I approach the issues that exist in Parksville. This starts with facilitating connections between community members, organizations and city council to tackle the issues that matter most to people.

The Issues

Water – is the topic most at hand for residents. We need to make decisions about long-term plans for improving reliable, sustainable  water delivery which support the health and environmental flow requirements of the Englishman River, and the health of our aquifer.

Housing - the cost of housing is a significant driver for poverty in our area. Seniors on fixed incomes, working people in the tourism and service industry, the unhoused and those at risk of losing housing, young families; these are examples of people who need access to more affordable housing options. A mix of housing is needed. Ground-oriented housing is a preference for many families wanting to move to the area.

Active Transportation – improving active transportation options need to be included wherever possible when reviewing and planning for infrastructure upgrades. This can & should incorporate elements that mitigate the effects of climate change.

Fiscal Responsibility – Budget decisions underly all decisions made by Council. Some challenges ahead include the RCMP detachment contribution as our population grows.

Recreation – we have made some strides with recreation facilities. This is an ongoing topic of concern. A regional, long-term recreational plan is needed.

The O.C.P. – The Official Community Plan is a guiding document that informs decision making at the Council table. This is particularly true of land use decisions. A full review of the plan continues to be an important goal. It is an opportunity for a wide variety of local groups and individuals to share their perspectives on what we want as a community going forward; now and in the coming years ahead.
